Cypriot police consider political motive for the murder of Hadzikostis

The Cypriot police have questioned 120 people until now in connection with the murder of local media mogul Andis Hadzikostis. Testimony is expected by additional 70 witnesses.

The case of the murder of the famous Cypriot becomes more tortuous and it gains economic and political nuances. According to Cypriot police at the core of the assassination organization and execution are three perpetrators, one organizer, who is hiding outside the country and the brother of a famous TV host, who was arrested just few days ago.

So far the reasons for the "removal" of young Hadzikostis seem to be economic. New versions of the murder lead police within political circles. According to local sources, the father of the murdered - Kostis Hadzikostis had excellent relations with the deceased Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos. His media holding "Diaz" fully supported the political views of Papadopoulos, including the rejection of the Annan plan.

Some time ago the father Hadzikostis asked to enter in the political governance of the country more deeply, not hiding his desire even to the presidential position of the republic. Rumors suggest that Papadopoulos refused to satisfy the request of his friend and then the media holding political distanced itself from Papadopoulos and began to support opponents of the former president. This became especially noticeable at the beginning of the election campaign of the last presidential elections. Later through his colleague Saris Palakis, Papadopoulos transferred 20% of Diaz’ shares to Elena Scordeli – TV host, who before used to work in a newspaper and a television channel, owned by Hadzikostis, who subsequently (but before the transfer of the shares) was fired.

It is possible that this was the reaction from the circle of Papadopoulos as an expression of revenge because Hadzikostis no longer shared the views of the former president. All these data are reviewed by the police, which continues the investigation of the case.
