A connection between the "Lagarde list" and two of the biggest political scandals has been found

The case of the already proverbial list of names of Greek citizens with significant deposits in foreign banks is becoming increasingly complicated. Sources claim that economic prosecutor Grigoris Peponis and his deputy, Spyros Mouzakitis, have found evidence connecting the specific list, known as the "Lagarde list" with the political scandals regarding the properties of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos and Proton Bank of Laurentios Laurentiadis.

In particular, they have found a deposit to the amount of 300,000 euro made by the wife of a political person, whose name appears on the controversial list and discovered that one of the persons involved in the scandal with Laurentios Laurentiadis deposited large amounts as "black money" in foreign banks through Proton Bank.

The economic prosecutors have submitted their findings to the competent judicial authorities who are investigating the two political scandals from the recent past. We recall that the outbreak of the scandal with the exchanged properties of the Vatopedi Monastery for expensive public land and buildings was the beginning of the end of the second government of New Democracy with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

At the same time, it has become clear that the two former heads of the Office for Combating Economic Crimes Yiannis Diotis and Yiannis Kapeleris will testify next week in the case of the suspected suppression of the "Lagarde list".

They will have to explain the way in which they acted with the list, that has turned out to have been in the hands of former Finance Minister George Papakonstantinou since 2010, and why the data in it have not been considered for nearly 20 months.

According to sources, the two former directors of the economic control service will submit written explanations to the economic prosecutors. A few days ago, they defended their actions before the commission on institutions and transparency. Yiannis Diotis and Yiannis Kapeleris told the deputies that they had responded in the right way, as the list had reached them informally and therefore, it could not have been used in a lawful manner.
