Breast Cancer – a Leading Cause for Mortality-Rate among Greek Women

Two years ago the world was shocked from the American actress Angelina Jolie’s disclosure about the double mastectomy she has undergone,  to eliminate the threat from breast cancer. A short while back the wife of actor Tom Hanks – Rita Wilson has also shared her problem that got herself a double mastectomy.  Many other women, famous and not famous, had done the same thing and there are not afraid to speak on the subject. They think, and with good reason, that this is the way to show the importance of preventive medical check-ups.
Breast cancer is the most widespread type of this disease among women. More than 1,6 million women in the world a year are being diagnosed for this disease. In Europe their number is more than 450 000 and about 140 000 of them are dying.
Over 2000 per year are the disease’s victims in Greece
In Greece the breast cancer is main reason for death, caused by cancer. More than 4900 women get diagnosed per year, and more than 2000 of them lose the battle.
According to data from Anatomic Pathology Laboratories for tumor diseases for 2011 there are 6 454 cases with breast cancer. 27-28% of these women are aged less than 50 years of age, and 45% from the women diagnosed proceed with mastectomy.
The specialists stress on the fact, that if the cancer is being diagnosed on time and appropriate treatment can start right away, the forecast is very good. But even when cases of metastasis the breast cancer is influenced from the treatment and the life of the people on the sick list could be prolonged with more than 5 years.
HER2- Positive breast cancer
One of 5 diagnosed for Breast cancer women has cancer type HER2-positive, which is particularly aggressive.
Cervical cancer
With more than 530 000 new cases in the world per year, the cervical cancer is the third most widespread type of cancer amongst women after the breast cancer (22,9%) and colon cancer (9,4%).
The timely diagnosing plays a crucial role in the battle with the disease, αs less than 1/5 of the diagnosed women in stage IV have a chance to live more than 5 years.
Ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer is the fourth most spread type of women cancer in Europe. In Greece there are over 900 cases every year, more than 500 women dye. More than 70 000 women yearly are being diagnosed with disease in Europe and approximately 45 000 lose the battle over disease.  
During the last 4 years the therapy of the illness has changed, with implementation of new types of treatment thus leading to a change in life expectancy of patients far gone with ovarian cancer.
