A weak earthquake of 4.4 on the Richter scale was registered in the region of Pylos in the southwest Peloponnese. The seismographs of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens and the Laboratory of Geophysics at Thessaloniki Aristotle University registered the epicentre of the earthquake 22 kilometres northwest of Pylos and 194 kilometres southwest of Athens.

The quake was recorded at 11:04 pm on Wednesday and its focal depth was 82 kilometres.

Meanwhile, aftershocks in Kefalonia continue, the majority of them being with a lower magnitude. No quake above 4 on the Richter scale was registered on Wednesday. However, seismologists warn that the danger has not yet passed, mostly because of the high seismicity of the region.

As stated by GRReporter reader Krasimira Georgieva, who has lived on the island for 15 years already, "There are constant earthquakes here but none of them was like this one. Otherwise, the media show only a small part of the island."

The allocation of the lump sum aid of 580 euro to the residents whose homes have been designated as unsuitable for habitation started on Wednesday afternoon. Around 1,200 people continue to spend nights on board the "Eleftherios Venizelos" ship but the number of those who need shelter is constantly increasing and the authorities are seeking alternative solutions.

It is already clear that Greek Minister of the Interior Yiannis Michelakis and Commissioner for Regional Development Johannes Hahn will consider the possibility of providing exceptional financial assistance to Kefalonia from the European Solidarity Fund. The two politicians will discuss the issue at a meeting that will take place in Athens on 6 February.
